Well over the last couple of weeks I have been making my own hamster cage, I didnt want to let anyone know incase it all went wrong lol, but now it is finished so I thought I would add a few pics for you to have a nosey at.
Here they are:
http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/ad31/princess-rhi89/DSCF2908.jpghttp://i919.photobucket.com/albums/ad31/princess-rhi89/DSCF2920.jpghttp://i919.photobucket.com/albums/ad31/princess-rhi89/DSCF2932.jpghttp://i919.photobucket.com/albums/ad31/princess-rhi89/DSCF2961.jpg

Oscars:http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/ad31/princess-rhi89/DSCF2928.jpg
Maisies:http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/ad31/princess-rhi89/DSCF2929.jpg
Lizzies:http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/ad31/princess-rhi89/DSCF2930.jpg

They seem to love them, I used Gloss on the outside of the cages as the hammies wont come in contact with the outside, and I used plastikote on the inside, there wasnt enough to cover the back, floor and shelf, so I used wallpaper on the back with plastic covering so I can wide it down when I clean them out, I then bought 4 packs of 4 vinyl floor tiles from poundland to put on the floor and the shelf. I used wire mesh at the back for ventalation and also drilled 10mm holes in the sides to add more ventalation. The doors are made from a wooden frame with perspex sheet.

Hope you like them :) xxx

Oooh and Ive added a couple of pics for suga, hope and others with slower connections :) xxx

oooh let me work that out lol.

The MDF was £12 at B&Q and they cut it to the measurements I wanted,
The 2x4 timber was £7 at B&Q
The wood planks were £5 at B&Q
The perspex was £18 at Homebase
Hinges were £2.10 at Wilkinsons
The handles were £1 for 4 at The Range
Mesh was £4 but bought it for my carrier so didnt cost extra at Wilkinsons
The gloss for the outside which the colour is called putty was £3 at B&Q
The locks were £3 at The Range
The floor tiles were £4 for 16tiles at Poundland
Screws, woodglue, etc were all in my house from previous diy attempts
= £59.10
Not bad for 3 good size cages considering you'd pay more than that for 1 HH :D

It took about a week and a half all together but that was on and off not constant, just when I had a spare hour x
I got the background free as a sample from the wallpaper section of the range xx

I wish you'd post this two week back. I was going to build a cage out of some spare wardrobe wood, with mesh front and back and ceramic tiles (that's if they're not toxic)
but chickend out as noone on here (as far as I know) has done it, so I just bought two 100lt storage boxes for bin cages instead.

Yours look look really good. I might still make a wood cage later on for a new syrian I'm thinking of getting and then just give my nethew one of my 100lt bin cages instead.

I would love to make you one Mark lol, I really enjoyed doing it, I plan on making them some wooden toys when I have some more money, to keep me busy until I can find a job.

I will def get some pics of them in them, I have placed things at the front of each cage so they can look out through the perspex, its so cute when I see them having a nose out, and no more bar chewing :D

Awww dont be scared of making one Jayne its not as hard as it looks, I over chiselled *sp? on the middle door, but it was my fault for rushing, just needs a bit of a sand down. If you need any advice PM me Im happy to help anyone looking to try their own make. I dont have internet access all the time so if it may take a couple of days before I get back to you, but I will I PROMISE lol
Glad you all like and thank you all for your wonderful comments. xx

Awesome job!

It occured to me, looking at the wheels in your photos, Rhi, that they are probably Silent Spinners but in unfamiliar colors (and with spiral cutaway holes). Are those some sort of an old design or not S.S. at all? I love the light blue plastic.

princess-rhi89
03-29-2011, 10:45 AM
Well the are called Silent wheels, not sure if they are the same as the silent spinners I got them for pampurred pets, its the only place I know that stock them. They are only 7.5inch mind, which is ok for dwarfs and small syrians, I need a new bigger wheel for Oscar but just cant afford one atm, he still uses his blue one atm with no probs tho, Id just prefer him to have a larger wheel xxx

03-29-2011, 11:35 AM
Ah, they don't have an on-line store to check. I'm intrigued though if it comes in a 5.5" size. That'd be perfect for my robos.

princess-rhi89
03-29-2011, 12:10 PM
No it only comes in the 7.5 in the shop, although it is a very smooth wheel and my little campbells has no problem running in it at all xxx

hello sorry to post on this cos i know its old but i want to know which pampurred pets you got those wheels in rhi ive been looking for some the one in pughs or st mellons? also how did you cut your perspex!

ha so many questions thanks :) x

princess-rhi89
04-09-2011, 04:03 PM
Ooh just noticed this sorry late reply.
I got my 1st yellow wheel in pughs, and the 2nd yellow one and the blue one in st mellons, they also do a pink one, if they haven't any in stock ask the girl behind the counter they should be able to order you some in, or get stock sent down from another store.

My friend is a retired carpenter so he cut my perspex for me using a circular saw, although as long as you support it properly you should be able to use a jigsaw or a normal saw.

Thank You! I would love to make and sell them if the demand was there and I had the funds upfront. They are so bulky would only be able to sell locally shipping would cost a bomb. Unless I did flat pack versions lol.
Im 5 and half month pregnant at the mo so dont think Id have the energy to finish another just yet lol and my bump is starting to get in the way of me doing things hehe xxx
