Here is a Christmas story I wrote which I thought you might enjoy!

A Letter To Santa

It was Christmas Eve and the pet shop was shut. A street lamp shone in through its window, illuminating the hamster cages. They were all empty, except for one. Tightly curled in his bedding, in a little ball, sat a dark chocolate-brown hamster with the pinkest nose you have ever seen! He had no name, but the pet shop owner had nicknamed him Pinky, not fully realising that it would have suited a girl hamster better. The dark, gloomy shadows of his play tubes were tall on the cage walls. He huddled more closely into his bedding. It looked like he was to spend Christmas alone. He had written a tiny letter to Santa and slipped it into the pet shop man’s own letter when he was getting cleaned out but, so far, no reply. And it was almost too late. Pinky would have liked more than anything in the world to have an owner. But it didn’t look like he was to get one...

In a town not very for away a little girl called Rhianna had just hung her threadbare stocking at the foot of her bed. She wasn’t expecting much for Christmas. Her father had died when she was a baby and her mother had just lost her job so they didn't have much money to spare. She gazed out at the busy town, sprinkled with snow, and a street lamp lit up the road. Busy people doing last minute shopping scuttled about like tiny beetles. How she wished she could be out there now, building snowmen, having snowball fights, but the place she most wanted to be was the pet shop. She wanted a hamster. Rhianna turned and looked at the space she had made on her bedside table, just big enough for a hamster cage. She had written a letter to Santa, but no reply. She wasn’t sure she even believed in him any more, she never really had. Not properly. She dreamed of having a hamster, caring for it, cleaning it out, playing with it every day, but that wasn’t going to happen, she knew it.

Meanwhile, up in the North Pole, Santa was checking his letters before he set off. The sleigh light shone brightly in through the window. As he read one a tiny sheet of paper slipped out of the corner. “Hmm, that’s funny, I haven’t seen this before,” he murmured quietly to himself. He perched his glasses on the end of his nose and started to read.

‘ Deer Santa,
I hope yoo get this as ther is wun thing I longg to hav. I wood lighk more than enything to hav an oaner. Prefereblee a littel girl or boi hoo wood reelly lighk a pet and luv me and cair four me as much as I wood doo them. I reelly hope yoo can fynd me wun.
Lots of luv
Pinky ’

“ My, my. Where in the world am I going to find a keen owner?” thought Santa to himself. And then he remembered. “ Of course! Rhianna!” he squeaked. He rummaged around for the right letter. He was going to give her a toy hamster as he had no hammies left in his workshop but this was the perfect opportunity.

“ Ok elves, off we go!!! On Dasher, on Prancer!” And he lifted the sleigh off the ground and into the night sky. They sailed along until they came to the pet shop where he stopped the reindeer on the roof. He slid down the chimney with ease and looked around for the hamster cages. He chose the nicest one and placed the money on the table. He then chose some toys for it and bought some food, some bedding and a water bottle. And, lastly, he waddled over to the hamsters and peered into the cages. “ Hello! Pinky, is that you?” he called. “ Wha? Who is it? Wow! Santa! It’s you! Have you got me a new owner?” replied Pinky sleepily. “ Indeed I have, but we better be off. We mustn’t keep Rhianna waiting!” “ Rhianna? Is that the name of my owner? Wow,” said Pinky dreamily.

Santa picked up Pinky out of his cage, tucked him into his jacket and scrambled up the chimney. He jumped into the sleigh, and, they were off! Soaring up into the sky. Pinky was a little scared at takeoff and landing but the rest of the journey was fine. As soon as they landed Pinky poked his whiskery nose out of Santa’s collar and looked around him. Santa slipped down the chimney and ran up the stairs to Rhianna’s room. They looked around. It was little more than just a bed, wardrobe and bedside table. But not after Santa was through with it. He emptied some of his bulging sacks and arranged the presents neatly against the walls. But Rhianna was beginning to stir. Santa placed Pinky’s new cage onto the bedside table in the space that Rhianna had made and was about to put Pinky into it when Rhianna sat up in bed. “Wow! Santa, you’re for real?” breathed Rhianna, “ and you’ve got me a hamster! Oh, so you did get my letter!” “ Of course,” he smiled, “but before you can have him, you must promise to always love him and care for him as much as he does you and always play with him. Do you promise?” “Of course I do!” grinned Rhianna and ran to hug him. “ Then here you go!” And he passed her Pinky. So whilst she cuddled him, Santa slipped downstairs and was on his way again. And in the morning when Rhianna woke up, do you know what she called her new pink-nosed hamster? Rudolph!
