Well Autumn has arrived and our garden is full of acorns. I see wild animals such as mice and squirrels eating them but does anyone know if it is safe to give them to hamsters? We gave ours a bramble (blackberry) today and they loved that for sure!

Acorns are all over the place here! White and red oaks are dropping them. I’m interested to know if they are safe as well. I wonder though, what about pollution and the possibility if mites or small bugs living inside? I suppose we could freeze them first.

I would say no and wouldn't try it. I know that acorns are definately poisonous to us (would make me hesitant to handle them too etc) but i also know they are poisonous for a lot of other critters, squirrels are the only ones i know to eat them really, bit like conkers.

Personally i wouldn't try it. Although there are lots of hazel nuts that can be collected and beech nuts too i think.

Thanks for that Skwee. We wont try it as it is too risky and we obviously would never feed anything that might be toxic. Has anyone ever fed bananas?

There is dried bananas in the hamster mix I give hammis, I sometimes give hammis a bit of banana, also hammis loves bread soaked in milk. but if your hammie leaves any be sure to take it out.
