Hey everyone! I thought it would be fun to start an updated thread about this. One thing I love about cage cleaning is rearranging it in fun ways, and coming up with new ideas to help keep the hamster’s entertained and stimulated. Plus I like to see what other people have done. We do have an old thread about the same topic, but many pictures that have been posted don’t show anymore. So please post your hamster cage set-ups here! :D

Remember to keep large images as URL links. Meaning anything that changes the width of this forum.

Okay so I'll start first. Some of you may remember a thread where I decided to give my syrian hamster Gwen’s cage a upgrade. Well here are the same pictures again. I took her boring old 29-gallon tank and gave it a second level! She loves it! :)

http://www.hamstercentral.com/images/myhammies/gwencage02.jpg

Now here is a picture of my robo's cage. This is Pichu! He lives in a ten-gallon tank. :)

What great cages you got there, Does it take a long time to clean out Gwen’s cage?

SnuggleHam

It doesn’t take long, but it’s a large tank, so it’s heavy and awkward to handle. I usually get my husband to help me get it off the stand for cleaning.

Does Pichu manage to get up that verticle tube? :? My robos nest anywhere and everywhere! Their preference right now is to nest in their plastic corner sand bath! (or under it sometimes!) I`ve ordered them a Gabber Rex cage online, so I`m hoping it will arrive this week. They are in a Savic Rody tank, which I feel is too small for them.

Pichu climbs up the tubes just fine; he zips up and down that thing! His preferred sleeping place is up in his little tower.

Here are our cages! We use the Gabber Rexes for most of our hams because they are roomy and instead of having lots of levels have a very big floor area. This gives the hams lots of room and stops them from 'bungee jumping'! We have a selection fo toys so change them with every cage clean so they don't get bored.

Awesome! I do love those cages! Im starting to see similar stuff here in the US. I like the shape of these for the same reasons you said PH. But I do love a good bin cage as well hehe. Thanks for sharing pics! :)

Here is a pic of my cage for my 2 female chinese. Although, looking at the Gabber Rex cages i may look into getting one of those as they look much bigger. Mine is a Savic Rody de Luxe (i think the 'Luxe' bit was added on as mine came with tubes but i no longer use them) I like to change their toys about abit to give them something different but everything else stays in the same place :D Oh, i have changed it again from this picture as soon as i get a picture loaded i will post it on here

Aww, thanks for asking Souffle :D
They are getting along fine now *touching wood* I think it was maybe just a faze they were going through but they are still having their moments of play fighting but nothing bad to report :D In fact, i will post some more pics of them in the hamster photo section, i managed to get some lovely pics of Sour, she's the only one that will sit still long enough
It is a good home for them but i would like to give them a bit more floor space if you know what i mean :?

By the way, i love everyones cages. They are all fab

Hey it works! It looks like plenty of room for two dwarf hamsters! Their cage looks sparse though. Do you have any empty tissue boxes or even cereal boxes? I give mine half a tissue box to sleep in, they seem to love it :) Just an idea encase you needed some. :)

TigerBluEyez
01-30-2007, 07:14 AM
Great idea! Yeah I know it's a bit sparse but it's just temporary til I can get them some more toys and stuff. I'll definitely try the tissue box thing!

racinghamster
01-30-2007, 07:57 AM
Definately add a box of some kind for them to nest in with some ripped up toilet tissue! Just cut a door into it. Dwarf hamsters also need a sand bath, which you add a few inches of chinchilla sand to. This keeps their fur nice and clean. You can of course use a shallow dish for this instead of buying an actual corner loo! Ceramic, metal or plastic, as long as they can roll in it with some added room.

Nice job on the `bin` though! :)

Do you think it's too cramped?

What toys do you guys use?

TigerBluEyez
02-04-2007, 09:40 PM
Looks good. Doesn't look too cramped to me. I don't use a ton of toys except for two wheels (I have two dwarf hamsters) and a seesaw type of thing that you can see in the pics. I also just bought a run-around ball for them... I give them chew sticks and toilet paper rolls too for fun. I'm sure others will have more/better ideas for toys.

Looks ok to me as long as you give him lots of cuddles, which I know you do :) If you wanted you could put a eggbox with a few holes in it, its the only thing my hams chew! :D

Here is Sakana's digs. He has a bin cage. It is a little smaller than his old one, but it fits better in my small apartment. :)

That is his new Wodent Wheel too! He is super excited about it, and I am too. It is a lot quieter than his old wheel. It saddens me though that he doesn't sleep in his strawberry. He had a ecotrition chewable hut before, he slept in it for awhile, but stopped. Anyway, look good to you? It is nearing cleaning time again, just to note :P

do they like the coils? did they come with the cages or did you add them yourself?

Pouchy
06-10-2007, 05:37 AM
Yes they do like the pipes. I added them myself. They are plastic ridged drainage or gas pipe that for some reason we were given a roll of sometime ago. They are ideal for hamsters especially dwarfs. The inside is ridged makeing it easy for them to climb up. My syrian likes them too. However the piping is not flexible and I don't know whether connectors for manufacturers systems like Rotatsk would enable them to join together.
For sometime I have been considering whether to cut the rest into lengths and flog them to interested people either here or on ebay.

My girls just got a new cage last week. They were in two habitrails connected, but now are in a 20 gallon long aquarium.

Here are the pictures I took of it soon after setting it up for them.
It's since changed a bit, but you get the gist. :D

She now has a wee wooden house to sleep in, a much bigger puzzle playground and the wee red and yellow house is in the corner - where she wees.

Bailey's gabber rex:

The water bottle is now taped on the outside and the wheel is where it should be!

Before Benji moved in:
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e336/Bailey2510/Benji_/newcage.jpg

It was sorted properly when he was in it (i.e more bedding in the top, tubes ina better position, toys)

As well as Benji's Imac, I have a Savic Rody and a Ferplast Laura currently not in use.

Zoban
07-31-2007, 12:22 PM
I cheat a bit on the cleaning in the recruitment of a vacuum when the hammies are in thier balls elsewhere.

Bonus is the vac is a filter queen and desn't need bags so I can dump the bin in the compost.

If the tubes need any extra care then they are of course taken out of the setup and given a wash. Depending on the part I swap it out right away with spares vs. having to hurray with the wash and such.

This is Dave, my lone Roborovskii's cage - I've grabbed some different views, so you can get an idea.

Dave is a very small, very nervous little Robo - tame, but not overly fond of the outside world. She likes some safe space, so I've made sure she has plenty.

Here's the bottom of the cage, showing the burrows I've made for her - the one on the left is simply a u-turn tunnel, but the one on the right leads to another nest, where I hide treats :)

Main shredded paper nest is top left.

http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii186/Gust0o/17022008222.jpg

Dave used to be quite keen on digging - "stereotyped behaviour", as I've since discovered - whereby she was digging, because her nature compelled her to do, in the absence of an existing burrow. I've had some amazing success putting these in , and the behaviour has disappeared! :)

View from the side - she has a wheel, and I've added a climbing frame the second level. She enjoys climbing on the bars, and has become stressed when I've previously tried to stop this. So the frame is there to facilitate this, safely, and there's plenty of bedding beneath.

http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii186/Gust0o/17022008224.jpg

View from the top - sandbath is in there. Not a massive cage, but she seems to enjoy it. All that's missing are the climbing treats I hang from the bars, which give her a way to climb down from without dropping.

http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii186/Gust0o/17022008226.jpg

And, lastly, a sleepy little Dave emerging from her burrow! :D

Yes, she's got a litte cardboard house at the back - perforated for ventilation. It's buried at the top right of the picture, so it's not visible, but you can see the entrance near my foot.

I'm happy that she's happy :)

i do have 5 syrians as well, but i haven't uploaded photos of their cages yet

the reason i have 7 single robos is because i bought a group of 4 from pets at home that were meant to be all girls, but they weren't and i had 14 babies! Gem the chinese was a rescue. i went to get a winter white and there she was and i felt sorry for her and brought both of them home!

I know max and paddy's cages are too small, i want to get bigger ones for them but i don't have anywhere to put them! at the mo their cages are technically the same dimensions as the gabber lux, but i think the shape just makes it awkward to fit stuff in (they are square rather than oblong)

Its big! 80cmx60cmx60cm Have a look at the link i gave you theres good detailed pics there, it is an absolute bargain, like i said some bits of it arent the best its not easy to put together but you can put aside a day to fiddle and reinforce the corners which is what i did. :)

I am a new (and first-time) owner of a golden banded female Syrian hamster named Bella. I must admit I did not do my homework before going out to buy a hamster, and the pet store sold me an OVO, which was obviously too small for Bella. They also sold me timothy hay for bedding, and they put Bella in a bird box that Bella chewed her way out of in the car about 5 minutes later. Luckily I had just finished setting up the OVO and got her in that before she was running totally free in the car.

I've kept fish in the past, so I have a few aquariums in storage that I pressed into service for my new hamster. I had an 80 gallon tank, but I figured the 33 gallon was probably sufficient. :) I built the three roof frames, which the cat has already perched on at least once to check out her new housemate.

I figured the three roof frames would make it easy to access the cage by just moving one panel on top of another one. However, my son was in love with the OVO cage, so I had to attach it to the aquarium to keep him happy. That means I only have the one roof panel accessible now. Bella actually seems to spend more time in the OVO than in the tank for now, although she's usually in the tank when we wake up in the morning. The silent spinner in the tank is too small (at 6.5"), and she prefers the 7.5" wheel in the OVO. I've ordered an 8.5" Comfort Wheel to put in the tank, along with some puzzle playground pieces.

http://enmasse.ca/cage/Cage1.jpg

http://enmasse.ca/cage/Cage2.jpg

That cardboard tube in the corner proved a bit of a disaster. It was originally lying down on its side, but I lifted it up to place my hand in the corner for the hamster to sniff. Then I also dropped a short chunk of 1.5" PVC pipe in there as well to get it out of the way as well. I left the tank and came back after about a minute and saw the tube shaking. Bella had climbed into the tube and fell in head first. She had her head stuck down inside the PVC pipe inside and was good and stuck. I lifted the tubes off of her, and she went on a wild tear around the tank for a few minutes, burrowing like crazy.

Here is Bella in her OVO den. Yesterday, I disconnected the den and placed it down inside the aquarium to wake her up for the kids before they went to bed. This morning, Bella moved all of her bedding out of the den and into the little house at the back of the main OVO unit. Guess she's looking for safer digs. :)

http://enmasse.ca/cage/Bella.jpg

Do Syrians sometimes outgrow the tubes? The pet store told me she was 3 months old. She can turn around in the OVO tubes, but the crittertrail tubes seem a little snugger, as her hair compresses into the bubbles in the tubes a bit as she passes through.

Taming is going slowly. I'm not sure who's more nervous, me or Bella. My 8 year old son is probably the least nervous, but I'm making him go slow, too. :) So far we're hand-feeding Bella treats and she's sniffing our hands a bit.

Welcome to the forum. I think you have made a great job of fixing the OVO on as an extension. She will probably be OK with the tubes although some very large syrians can get too big for them. She probably feels secure in the OVO just now and comes down to explore when you are in bed. I would say the sleeping pod is too small for an adult syrian and will get very hot and stuffy in summer particularly so watch out for that. She will tame as long as you are persistant and firm but gentle with her. She looks very pretty and long haired I would say and I look forward to seeing and hearing more about her.

Hi Cottonwood and welcome to the forum, well done you thats a brilliant idea fixing the Ovo to the tank a very clever idea having it as an extension. The petshop clearly didn't know what cages were best for syrians which is typical I really wish they would read up on suitable housing etc.

Hi Leedsgurl lovely Rotastak for stewie he has lots of room to play in. Thats gotta take alot of cleaning though.

Hi Joe14 I like your cage aswell, I didn't realise how much room the Imac's actually had, I might get one oneday.

What bedding do you have in the bottom cage hanlou? Is that the finacard?

Hi. Not been on here for a whle - busy preparing for hols then on hols etc! It's Bedxcel but I will be getting Finacard next I think. The Bedxcel is great but as they are big-ish squares they don't vacuum up very easily and I feel the Finacard may be better for my hamsters and Spiny Mice.

I've tried Aubiose but it's driving me mad it's so messy (and made me wheeze dispensing it into boxes which was slightly worrying!) so I'm going to try Finacard next. 8)

ETA: whoah Jane, if you ZZ2 is cramped then Tinkerbell is positively squished up in hers! I

think it's fine and I think you'd be ok to put more in again if you wanted to. Tink' loves the tube she has and her plastic 'house' is actually a storage box upside down with a doorway cut into it. We sanded the edges down so it's not sharp at all.

the caging goes all the way down to the base and there,s 2 doors at the top, so hopefully will be hamster escape proof.

I think the amount of toys and room you provide is totally dependent on your particular hamster.

I spend hours watching my dwarf hammies and it took ages to finalise their homes, I still change them a bit but I now pretty much know who likes what where!

This is Mika's cage, he's a pearl Winter White and he lives in a Mini Duna which he absolutley adores bless him

Yes, my Robos love that thing - they can dig under it because it is only half of the whole thing if you know what i mean.

There are two identical halves which attachs together to make a circular tube, crittertrail or rotastak or something like that  - but it is great for them to play in!

The other half is in one of my other cages.

Since my 3ft tank isn't coming (http://www.hamstercentral.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=44619), I decided to see what Pip thinks of the shelf in the duna. I took it out when Houdini turned into a bar chewer and never bothered to put it back in again.

I don't like it myself, but I thought i'd see if she does, it's her home after all. I had to remodel her puzzle playground slightly so I would fit under the shelf, and move her food and water bowls on top of it, but aside from that everything is in the same place.

Heya, I'm new to this site! And I'm loving it! I've had 4 robos for about a week now. I did have a syrian but sadly she passed away last week. I've had to seperate Bruce from the other 3 as he was VERY aggresive, I won't be taking him back to P@H, however as I don't trust them and would be worried about him. Anyway, my 3 robos are living in the old cage:

You have some great cages in Germany. They are lovely and roomy. I like the wooden toys and shelves. Do you make those yourself?

Yes, some of them ... in Henry's tank, I made the shelf for the Wodent Wheel and the two wooden boxes at the front. For Fenja's cage, I made this wooden "thing" in front of the Wodent Wheel, it helps her climb in (as the can't climb very well any more in her age) and it's a sand bath at the same time (the part right at the front is filled with sand).

Thought i would post a photo of my new shelving for my cages/hamster stuff etc.
I took the advice of ELC from another thread about these shelves and they're great!
Very sturdy, easy to build and you can have different combinations too.

I LOVE looking at hamster cages, the varities seem endless, and so many different designs. Currently, Jasper George is living in a 'recycled' cage. Previously it belonged to my hamster Squirt, but he hadn't used it long, so I kept it.

The cage is made by www.prevuepet.com (http://www.prevuepet.com) and I got it on ebay a couple of years ago forabout £30 brand new obviously!

The cage with just one bag of toys, there was another at my feet!

Herbert's current set up:

A glass tank with Ferplast Duna Fun extension.

He hasn't gnawed the bars so far as they are very close together and he loves being able to go up and down. Having the extension also makes it easier for me to access him and feed him etc.

Great photos Melon! That's the Gabber Rex, right? I've got one on the way, a blue one, and it actually looks even more spacious than I thought. I planned not to use the platforms, but even with them in there's still lots of space for toys! :D

Lanouk is now living in the cage Fenja had before, but he got a lot of new toys and stuff (mostly self-made), so that's what it looks like now:

http://www.petfoto.de/fotos/data/media/11/R0013475.jpg

His house, water bottle and the rise to his ... well, I call it "Rennbahn" (race-track), it's like a narrow shelf along the longest side of the cage.

http://www.petfoto.de/fotos/data/media/11/R0013478.jpg

Sand bath, Wodent Wheel, again the race-track, a tunnel made from cork and a box with maize granules:

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y55/Kay_zee/newcagesmall2.jpg

Ferplast Mary cage, obviously the food dish is rather on the large side so we are planning to buy a new food dish and water bottle tomorrow. Apart from that, the huge tunnel also came with the cage. There's enough room for a part second level, we're currently deciding on whether it's possible for later on.

I'll have to try to take some new ones of Biscuit and her mansion soon.
