I'd like to start this off but unfortunately I wont have the camera until Monday. But I plan on taking lots of pictures!!!

I would love to see what people have for cage set ups for their hams. So please post some pictures and share a bit about your cage and what you think makes it great!!!

I have three cages to clean out today lol, so they will look nice and neat for when I do get pictures taken.I cant wait to show everyone Gerald’s new bin cage!!

Right now I have the Crittertrail 2, that I have to clean in a few minutes. Hopefully tomorrow as planned I will go to Wal-mart, buy a suitable bin, and by tomorrow night have a bin cage. I'm going to use parts off of the Crittertrail and incorporate them into the bin. I will post pictures of it when I am finished.

Did you manage to get a bin Chris?

I’m really picky with my bins. I went to three Wal-Marts before I finally found my second one. I switched the cages around now though; Gerald is now in the first one with the bared sides. Gerbils are just too messy and they dig like crazy so now the they are in Gerald’s old cage where they can dig all they like and make no more mess on my floor!

I find most bins are too deep and not wide enough, and never have locking lids.. But if you can find a place with good Rubbermaid bins you're all set!

Here they are... Picture of my cage set-ups!!

Starting off... I have two of my bins stacked on top of an old 29 gallon fish stand. Gerald is on the bottom and my two gerbils Orlando and Sam on the top. The Roborovski tank that is in my bedroom on my dresser

I did get the bin last night babyboos. I started last night, got the front and back done, enough so that Biscuits could sleep in it. Once I get off of here I am going to finish it, take pictures, and put them on here tonight. My is 3 foot long, 15 inches tall, and 13 inches wide. it was a 95 quarts.

Well, I FINALLY got my pictures here, darn photobucket. Here are some pictures, although it's not done...it's took me so long because I've got so many ideas! I plan on adding a second level in one end of it. I still have to do the top, I'm trying to figure out how to put the "petting area" from my crittertrail onto the lid :?: Sorry for talking so much  , here are the pictures. Hope you like them.

Just finished...

Sorry that I couldn't get any close up shots of the whole thing, it's too big to fit in the whole camera with good details. Candace, you MAY NOT know it but there are TWO gerbils in your gerbil cage!   I though the only one you had was Orlando?

Hammydude, looks like you did a wonderful job on your bin cage!! What's the lid like? The images are a little small but you can still get a good idea of what you have done in there.

I'm glad you managed to find a clear large bin. I like the clear ones because it allows natural light in, plus you can see the critters inside.

Whats "the petting area"? is that some kind of tube like attachment from the other cage or something?

Yes I did get another gerbil, I'll post about it soon in the Miscellaneous Section...

Candace, what size is your robo aquarium? 20 gallon by the look of it? I was wondering - what method do you use to clean out the tank. Right now I have a 10 gallon and as Nibbles is nearing full size I'm going to be getting him a larger tank. Unfortunately bins are out of the question for me. Hamsters are not on the good side with my hubby and a large bin anywhere in our house is just not going to be appealing to him at all! I can not make him any angrier as he is giving me a hard time as it is! I have to admit also that I do prefer the clear glass tanks though, and noise reduction is another very important thing!

I will be getting a 20 gallon next. (I can get the screen cover to fit it also). I don't have any problem cleaning out my 10 gallon right now under the sink with the little shower attatchment. However a 20 gallon is heavier and will be much harder, if even possible, to carry and wash at the sink! Do you, after removing all the bedding and stuff just wipe yours down? Or do you carry it to a bath tub or something? (Which would be possible) I was just wondering :-)

Another thing I am thinking of, IF I can figure something out, would be to place some sort of tray on the bottom of the tank. That way I could just remove and thoroughly clean the tray, and give the whole of the tank a wipe down. (I use distilled white vinegar to clean mine, works great). This would make cleaning a lot easier each week. Then I wouldn't have to move it other than whenever I wanted to do a whole tank wash down... Just ideas... :-)

Coco,

My two roborovskis are actually in a 29-gallon tank. Since they are small they don’t really make any "wet corners" or spots. The critter care "carefesh equivalent" bedding absorbs pretty much everything and I only clean out their tank every other week simply because they are much smaller.

The 29-gallon is actually pretty heavy for me even with just bedding in it. What I do is get it on the floor and scoop all the bedding out with my hands and then I take a vacuum hose to vacuum out any seed husks or droppings. At the most id give the bottom a wipe.

For a Syrian’s I would think cleaning it somehow with water would be necessary unless you have your ham using a potty. I think your idea about getting a sort of tray to line the bottom is a good idea...

Your hubby sounds like a lamer lol.. I mean its a hamster, not some barking dog that pees on your floor and eats your furniture...

Hi Coco1 one suggestion I can think of is to remove as much of the litter as you can using a small brush and shovel, hoover any remaining residue out, and then clean and rinse it well. A nice deep litter layer, using something like Carefresh (on it's own or mixed with Aspen etc) and a potty, changed daily should help keep the need to do a complete clean out down to fortnightly hopefully. I have a "hamster" vacuum which was only about £25, which lives permanently in the hamstery. It uses reusable washable bags or throw away paper bags, depending on what you are going to be picking up!

You will need to make sure to clean the corners well, especially if the potty gets missed  and ensure you rinse well but apart from that you should hopefully be fine doing a complete wash out - in the bath is probably best - about once a month.

Sounds good Babyboos. I do clean the corners well, although he has a potty in one corner he also likes to use the other corner! (May have to get a second potty, although when I get the larger cage I will probably put a sand bath into that other corner anyway). He still potties in his house to a degree, I guess I can't completely rid him of that, even though he took to his potty immediately. His food bowl is in the other corner so that stays clean. This is one thing I do like about the aquariums - the glass is very easy to clean and any wet there wipes right up. I use a deep carefresh litter and that does most of the job for me.

Thank you :-)

Used to... that Crittertrail 2 had at least 10 different colors. The bars, wheels, food dish, top, bottom, petting area, and so on all were a different colors. It was made with "littlle" kids in mind. :D Only problem was the size.

I don't have any pics of my hamster cage at the moment, I will try to get one over the weekend. One of my hamsters is in the Crittertrail 1 cage, and the other is in one from Wal-mart. I want to get either a Crittertrail 2 or 3 cage. I haven't decided yet. I am trying to find somewhere cheap to get it from. Thanks.

loveitalot have you considered a bin cage? If you have a Syrian hamster a Crittertrail 2 will be too small for him. (I know from personal experience). Although it may be OK if you connect it to the Crittertrail 1.

This is my Ferplast Paula and it really is so small (46 x 46.5 x 31 cm) - there is no room for a potty in there once you get a food bowl, house and toilet roll tube inside... I am going to connect it to some more Ferplast Tube-Line / Combi add-ons and use it for one of my colonies of Winter White Russian Dwarves, but there are people out there I know who use these for fully grown Syrians. The Syrian hamster you see in the following pictures is only 4 weeks old and just over 3 inches long, 1.5 inches wide.

Welcome the latest addition to Babyboos Hamstery as yet un-named. There was a name I saw on here which I loved but sadly my sieve brain has forgotten it - can any of you remember, or suggest a name? The wheels these cages come with are tiny aren't they! She is running madly in it as we speak, must have got bored after spending TWO whole hours going round and round the tubes!

Carefresh you are a genius  That is it exactly :D and she did manage to work out those tubes pretty quickly so Cunning Ham is quite apt. In fact she was out off the holes where they connect to the cage before I had a chance to complete the circuit and off across the floor...

Babyboos, you must have been bored! Poor hams will probably get lost. when will you move cunning-ham out and the dwarfs in?

Emma
03-30-2005, 02:46 AM
Woah that's a lot of tubes!!!

I've seen the Paula cage in P@H - it seemed very expensive and too small (on it's own at least). But like you said I know some breeders who use cages that size - I met one who said the Criceti 9 was their standard Syrian cage.

I have one of those tiny wheels too that came with a Criceti 10 I just bought off eBay - it was for a hopeful future Syrian but Alfie is in it at the moment.

Do you buy your cages wholesale Babyboos, or have to pay the same ridiculously high prices as the rest of us at pet shops?

Her new Ferplast Rainbow is on order - just never came in time with the Easter Holiday but she is okay in there size-wise for a good 14 days or so. They do grow quite quickly at this age  I get a slight discount but I don't buy all my items from the one place so never really get a huge loyalty bonus. I just cannot find anywhere that stocks everything I need although some offer to order similiar products in, but I like to shop around and see what the competition have brought in new

When it comes to wheels, biggest is best. Ideally the hamster should not be bent backwards unduly whilst running - I know sometimes they run so fast they are almost vertical  but in general trotting along they should be almost straight backed. If in doubt go too big. Wodent Wheel Junior is 8" diameter, 2.6" wide, with 2.1" entry holes. Overall height 9.1". The Senior is 11" diameter, 3.5" wide, with 2.6" “mouse-hole shaped” entry holes. Overall height 12.3". Silent Spinner have a 12" diameter wheel if you think Biscuits is going to become small guinea pig sized. Some of the show hamsters we have are really quite huge and hardly fit in one hand

That’s is quite the cage babyboos, so many tubes!! Are they a pain to clean out each time you clean the cage? When I had my first hamster as a child I had a kind of plastic habitat by a company called Hartz I believe. It was one of those habitats where you could attach tubes. I loved the tubes, they weren't all that hard to clean, but then you had to run a wet soapy cloth through each one to get any urine stains out etc. I've been thinking of rigging up something for my gerbils, a tube system attaching to a ten gallon I have, maybe fill it with sand,

These Ferplast tubes (http://www.ferplast.com/en/pagina_136145.html) are great - ventilated all along their length on two sides and seperate in half lengthwise for cleaning. They are 2" wide so ample for even the largest dwarves and smaller Syrians. This is my first Paula but I have a Laura and a Liza already. I wash the base out first - as you can see in the Liza it is nice and deep 76 x 36 x 32.5 cm - good for keeping shavings in whilst the dwarves are digging and perfect as a basin for washing the rest of the bits in

Liza:

I took his adventure puzzle out just before taking the picture (needed washed  some silly boo had walked porridge all over it  ) - poor guy is wondering where it has got to - normally uses it to get a leg up to the tubes, although you can run them into the body of the cage if you want.

You can block off the ends if you want to move the cage around etc. This picture shows how the tubes come in two parts making washing a breeze.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v302/babyboos/b5e53c26.jpg

I have some of their larger Ferret tubes for my really chunky Syrians, and the lovely cleaners at my work collect the extra wide industrial toilet roll inner cardboard tubes for me. I also scrubbed out an old ceramic drainpipe - don't make them anymore I think... I refuse to buy anything made from PVC and that is all I could find in the hardware store when I went there :?

Well, I finally got Nibbles new home set up and he's moved in last night! Oh what joy! It's just so much fun watching them as they move around their new home, checking out all the corners, "ooooo... that's my food bowl, and my potty's in here too... hmmmm new BIGGER bed, cool, and so much more play space"!

He still has his Silent Spinner Wheel and I will be getting a larger one soon. I did get a Comfort Wheel but it was SO noisy, not squeeky, but rattled like crazy, so I returned it, as he is next to our guest bedroom! They may not all be like that, and I have seen another wheel, not sure what brand it is, but it seems to have a similar connection as the SS wheels and does have a stand (sold seperately) but the store didn't have any. It looked to be about 8 inches. The Comfort Wheel I know is 8 1/2". When Nibbles tried the Comfort Wheel he ran on it but not nearly as fast as he does on the SS. He absolutely FLIES on that thing and seems to be able to run so much easier on it. He fills up the SS but his back is not bent when he runs, and he has grown quite a bit in the past month. His back is horizontal and he does not go up the side of the wheel vertically, so I'm comfortable with him on this untll I find what I want. I may still try the Wodent Wheel but they don't always have them in the store.

His old tank was a 10 gallon, a typical 20" long, 10" wide by 12" high. It was fine when he was little but now he definitely needs more room in my opinion. His new tank is the 20 gallon - 30" long, 12" wide by 12 1/4" high. The 2" wider makes a difference and the 30" long is great so he can get a good walk in! Much more room for stuff. I added his little wooden triangular tube thingy in there which I had for his old tank but took it out due to lack of room. He enjoyed playing in this last night!

Also last night Nibbles had his first sand bath experience! I bought the Chinchilla sand and put a little into the pasta jar and let him explore. He went in and I was wondering if he would just pee in there, but he started to dig, then dig, and dig, and dig. and then rolled his whole head in it, and oh what fun! I didn't SEE him roll his whole body in it but who knows what he did after I went to bed as there was a little sand outside the jar this morning so I know he had a good time LOL! It's just so neat watching him explore his new stuff! :D

Here's his habitat. I do love the glass for viewing. It's on the bottom shelf of our book cabinet. This also allows me to pull it out onto the carpet where I can get him out. Plus, I do live in Texas and our summers get very hot. We do use air cond. of course but the lower shelf is much cooler and the ceiling fan directs fresh air to the sides of the room but it won't get drafty due to the glass. (And yes, it's well away from any windows!) Also for the warmer summer months I found, and bought, one of those marble slabs that they sell for chinchillas, to give them a cool place to lie on. It will fit under his sleeping house perfectly, and being marble, will not get hot. Should work great! (but don't need to use that just yet). OK, I'll stop rambling now!

Looks great Coco! Nice and big - I think that is much better for a Syrian. Gerald was living in a small 10 gallon, poor guy - I think 10 gallons are even too small for dwarfs in my opinion.

Maybe sometime you can add another level by making a wood stand with a ramp or something, even more places to climb and explore!

I really need to find a glass jar for my Gerbils, they kick all the sand out off the dish I currently put it in.

Coco1
03-30-2005, 10:01 AM
Yes Candace I have thought about adding another level of some sort, as long as its not too high where he can reach the wire screen top. He may not be able to get out with it but i'm sure if he was determined he could eventually chew through wire! I wouldn't put it past a hamster! Right now he can stand on top of his house and barely sniff the top screen and as its glass he can't climb the sides. The water bottle is a possibility but he has shown no interest of climbing up that to this point plus its that slippery metal / bottle which is hard to climb. I could make like a triangular shelf to go over his sand jar / potty side.

The possibilities....

Sand will come out of the jar, as he did last night! But I only put in a small amount. The Chinchilla sand I get comes in pouches where one pouch is used for a Chinchilla bath. I used half, or just under half a pouch which was plenty and will last a lot longer too.

SnuggleHam
03-30-2005, 10:24 AM
Ya that the same Chinchilla sand I get too. The thing with the gerbils is that they literality roll around it and fling it up in the air. I think if it were in a jar it would keep the sand in better and longer.

If your worried about the mesh wire lid you can always make a custom one with thicker wire. If you look at my article here

http://www.hamstercentral.com/binarticle1.htm you can see what kind of mesh I used for the top. No ham is going to chew through that!

Emma
03-30-2005, 11:38 AM
That's a great setup Coco1, Nibbles looks really good in it too! What have you used for the mesh top? If you have quite fine mesh (as in small squares, not flimsy wire) then he'll have trouble chewing it anyway. I made a second level in my tank by just putting legs on a floor tile - kinda like a mini table, and just sitting it in there.

Yeah sand can still get kicked out of jars if they're determined (that's all Merry does with it!). But whatever keeps them happy :)

Babyboos - that Liza cage looks good, I haven't seen that in shops before - is it an updated version of the Criceti 10, it looks the same size but with the tube attachments?

Coco1
03-30-2005, 12:07 PM
Candace, you're right, the jar I'm sure would hold in a little more sand if your Gerbils are that messy LOL! At least it only has one end to be kicked out of

Regarding the mesh, it is the type you buy for reptiles - it's described as "Heavy duty wire mesh, for small animals, reptiles and amphibians". They normaly do a good job and as the mesh is tightly woven & strong I think it would be hard for him to get a hold of it. If he ever showed any signs of chewing that then I would just cover with another wire top with wire like you used on your bins. I also like these tops as they have brackets that lock them down to the tank so they can't be pushed up.

Emma, Yeah the tile idea is a good one and I've seen this done. Who knows how creative I'll get! My hubby also enjoys carpentry and I could get him to make me a simple shelf out of untreated wood like his house is made of, it wouldn't take him long.

Oh, and I think we're on equal terms now - He hated the fact that I bought a hamster and was really mad & gave me a hard time but he wanted new HUGE speakers for his surround sound system and I didn't like his speakers so we both came to a truce. I told him not to give me any more hard times regarding my hamster if he didn't want his speaker wires cut LOL! He agreed!!! Wooo hoo! So maybe, just maybe he could make something nice for the cage - we'll see! I may be pushing it! We're both so stubborn LOL!

Too funny... :D

Babyboos - that Liza cage looks good, I haven't seen that in shops before - is it an updated version of the Criceti 10, it looks the same size but with the tube attachments?

Criceti 9 - 46cm x 29cm x 25cm

Criceti 10 - 59.3cm x 36.3cm x 25cm

Liza has a similiar deep base as the Criceti 10 but is slightly bigger - 76cm x 36cm x 32.5 cm. The main drawback is the access - one small wire door on the roof (if you look at the pictures of my cage again you can see it hopefully in the middle of the roof) - at least with the Rainbow cages you can open practically the whole roof and it has two large doors in the sides. I am constantly on the lookout for new cages - independant petshops and garden centres generally are best.

Finally got my PC back and access to my files! Yay!

Here is my set up. I have that shelf on the wall for the dwarf cages and the trunk with the Syrian. The shelf on top is for storage of bits & bobs and frankly, so is the rest of the room!

This WAS the spare room in the house but now it's the hamster room. Dedicated thus so the cats can keep their distance and the hamsters can live in peace without the 'lions' hovering over them. :D

That can of 'air' you see is for any cats that happen into the room. You can bet they scatter if given a shot of air! Most times all I have to do is pick up the can and never have to let out a shot! :P

Wow Joan.. I’m so jealous I wish I had more room for bin cages, and your bin cages look wonderful don’t you just love them!! You did a really nice job on the bins that you have.

How much do you spend on bedding, it looks like your using white care fresh? I have one tank and two large bins I clean each week and I go through about two bag if crittercare bedding each time, and they cost about 3.48 each, I just bought four of them at Wal-Mart and used almost one whole thing for my gerbil bin alone lol. But I love that bedding.

Candace, see that blue tub next to the bin on the trunk? Well, there is another one stacked under that one. Both of them are filled with the Carefresh. I buy 2 giant bags at a time and empty them out into the tubs. They store easily and less messy this way and for some reason, the static that the plastic of the tubs make, causes ALL the dust from the Carefresh to stick to the tubs and not the hammies bins.

Just make sure it's the Sterilite brand of these blue tubs because they have a slight texture on the sides and I have a feeling this helps keep the dust attached there due to the 'nooks and crannies'.

I just empty the bags into them and 'fluff' it as I'm emptying and the dust sticks to the sides of the tubs. When I get to the last of the Carefresh in each tub, I just vacuum out the dust and fill it again. Vacuuming creates the static so this ensures static in the bin for the new batch of dust to be collected! :)

As for cost, buying the big bags and bedding down real deep, as you can see in the pics, I only have to do a total clean out monthly vs weekly. I spot clean any wheels and potties, tubes, etc daily. I fluff the bedding once in a while too. Works great and this way it actually saves me money and I can then have the luxury of using the more expensive bedding.

So, you actually use less when you use more! :D

Today I made a bin cage for Zip&Zap (my new Campbell's). It's only a 65quart bin but it's better than the 10 gallon that they were in. I'll post some pictures tomorrow.

Well, here it is. Babyboos, I think she may like it  . Whenever I find the type of wire that I'm looking for I'll put that on the lid. Also I may add another bigger second story since the one they have now I cover with their chinchilla sand.Do you have any suggestions on what else I can do or what I couldhave done better?

i use two types of cage mainly, some have a rotastak set up the rest are in bins, though i may add due to a lack of any type of tool beyond screwdrivers for the computers, the bins are left with no fancy doors or layers, just plain simple 84 lt boxes. so high that even one of my syrians climbing up her waterbottle couldnt get out (there is a bin stacked ontop, same size, thats acting as a lid, as there is then no chance of escape but still nice air access too.)

thats two of the bins. i have to say that though i like the rotastak, its looks' the layers etc. the bins are so much easyer, and the dworfs realy love them. though i do wonder if shadow is as happy in them.

Not great pics I know, but these were already stored on the pc.

The first is a Ferplast Mini Duna cage. I use these for most of my hamsters. I have now replaced those red wheels with silent spinners.

This is my latest cage, a Hagen Zoozone. Its great. I have a colony of 7 Campbells girls in here, plus a litter of 6. One of the litter will be staying in here, the rest are boys so will be rehomed. I took this before I put in the Silent Spinner and the toliet roll tubes.

The dunas are all on a bookcase to keep them tidy. I have a few bin cages on the floor nearby which i use as hospital tanks, or nursarys before rehoming.
