Default Examnations.

I have met a few people on here who call themselves Beginners and they are obviously not. How about we have some examinations on the board that would determine what stage our knowledge is at? It would be a fun way of learning too.

I think that some people are just genuinely modest liam to be honest, so I personally don't find this a good idea at all. I see what you are saying, but to my mind, more concerning than those modest people who undersell their talents are those who describe themselves as 'expert' when clearly they are not, however others may take their words and advice as that of an expert.

The level of knowledge we place ourselves at is only a gauge of how we see ourselves, and like anything, it depends on your basis for comparison.

for example, despite keeping over 30 syrians, breeding, showing and caring for the little critters for some time now, I wouldnt think of classing myself as an 'expert' I would be too embarrassed to do so.

Mind you, I also know many people who I would class as experts including the chairman and committee of the National hamster club, and I can just about guarantee that they wouldn't class themselves as expert either

i classed my self as Highly knowledgeable haha , although i would only say that about my knowledge of chinese hamsters lol, i pretty sure there are many novice breeders with more knowledge of syrians than me.

There is always room to learn something new. That is what makes life fun. It is wonderful to have a forum for us to swap information.

I agree with Spud's mum on this and I don't think examinations are a good way of determining a persons level of knowledge. A person should really look at themselves and consider their knowledge before applying the 'highly knowledgable' category to their profile. foreverhamsters is right that few of us are overall 'highly knowledgable' including myself but many of us are in certain areas. In a perfect world we might have profile slots for our 'specialist subjects' I certainly consider foreverhamsters to be highly knowledgeable with regard to Chinese hamsters. I often refer queries on Chinese to him as I trust his knowledge. I think that if a person has experiance and is willing to find out the answers to more difficult questions or topics, to research and share their experience and to collect knowledge through reading and talking then they are worthy of the title 'highly knowledgeable'. Another sign of a highly knowledgable person is their willingless to ask questions and admit their failings and learn from others, to remember things, compare and offer various ideas and suggestions for any posts they may answer.
There is always something to learn and we have so much to gain from helping each other.

I think it's all relative. If i went on some forums i'd look really knowledgeable, but i know that there's no way i could class myself as that as i know how much there is to know, that i don't... if that makes sense. Maybe some people who would class themselves as highly knowledgeable, think that there's nothing more to know than the basics. Perhaps they don't even consider that something like genetics or breeding is worth knowing about, if you're not going to do it. In pet keeping, such a person would be classed as highly knowledgeable.

I like the idea of a quiz though, would be a little different! Might learn something new, although lets not call it an exam, I've enough of them lately
