Default Changing my user name?

Is it possible for me to change my user name to my own first name?

I find being called "Holly" by people I know a bit tedious and, whilst I appreciate the need for safety on the internet (especially for young people), I feel that, as an adult, I'd prefer to be called by my own name by my friends.

Is this possible?

Ah Holly you read my mind!

I was wanting to do the opposite, as I read the safety on the forums post and was a wee bit worried about some stuff I wrote

People on here here would know it's me but anyone looking at posts wouldn't if you know what I mean?

Yep you need to change your name Holly, I was most confused when Plankton referred to you by real name - took me a long time to twig! Its also why I had no idea who you were when you were pointed out at shows

Normally I don't allow user name changes on the forum, because then we have to manually go into the database and change the user name there in addition to the forum so that the profile works and links with the new user name. In short its a pain and it wouldn't be fair to allow one person to change it and not another.

Jayne, If you have posted some things about yourself that make you uncomfortable, then the best thing to do would be to go back and edit the posts to remove whatever material you feel wasn't the best to share. If your unable to edit the posts, send me a PM and tell me which ones and I'll be glad to do that for you

The update of rules and forum/internet safety was just to keep people mindful, for their own protection. No need to get paranoid, especially if nothing has come of any of the things people may have posted in the past. The community is rapidly growing so it seems an appropriate reminder.

That's a shame, I feel really stupid being referred to as Holly by people who know me and, as IN says, no one knows who I am. Oh well, you live and learn!

Sorry Holly, I cant play favorites here. I understand where your coming from, but then that puts me in a very awkward position if other people approach me about the same thing for other reasons. The forum safety notice wasn't meant to be a rule, just a reminder as I said. You are more then welcome to sign each of your posts with your name, or perhaps put that information clearly in your hamster central profile

Does that mean people can still call me Julie if I sign my posts as Julie then? That's not how the reminder reads to me but if that's the case then that would suit me fine.

Holly isnt a stupid name, its a nice name, not your real name perhaps, but certainly not stupid Its your HC name, the one you were born with, wear it with pride! Lol and yes, its alright with me if people call you Julie on the forum. So long as the individual doesn't mind if people use their real names publicly on the forum its okay.

If anyones name is being used publicly that doesn't want it, then they should contact the person and ask them to stop, or they should contact me and explain the situation and I will deal with it We would advise people not to use real names preferably, but ultimately its at the digressions of the user.

perhaps you could change your location to just Scotland rather than Glasgow, so it's a little bit safer. Jayne is a really common name, so it's better than if you were called faloola or something :P

I've changed the announcement on safety to better reflect the intention. As Snuggleham says, it is meant to be a safety reminder, not a hanging offence!
I think a major concern is still using others names without permission, and all safeguarding ourselves and younger members. Sorry if my post didnt make that fully clear!
I think another thing we have to be aware of is the confusion for people who dont know who we are referring to - for example if a real name 'ie Faloola is used and members have no idea who is being responded to.
Anyway apologies for confusion - just stay safe y'all
