I would take him to the vet because he may need some painrelief like Metacam which he could stay on.

I think this is quite a common health issue with elderly hamsters and i have come across it before with our hamsters. As they age and near the end of their lives their organs start to shut down especially the kidneys causing symptoms like you describe.

I doubt that the vet would have a cure but then again, it may be something treatable like an infection only a vet could treat but i would get him checked out to at least make him more comfortable.

It may have happened late in his life but at least your hamster has the opportunity now to experience love and the care he so needs and that every hamster deserves.
