Same here. I have made many bin cages using a Dremel cutting tool with a plastic cutting disc attachment.

It's easier to drill the holes first for the cable ties and then cut the square for the mesh but first of all i'd cut the mesh to the required size with a wire cutter and mark the location of the holes to be drilled with an electric drill.
You'll need to cut out and mesh a front window as well aside from a meshed lid so the hamster can see out. I also add a back vent for extra ventilation.

The rub is in fact easier to cut than other cheaper boxes.
