I would definitely make a meshed lid because they can be very good at climbing. Again, it depends on the hamster's personality. I have a dwarf who doesn't want to climb or get out of his enclosure at all and another who is a right little acrobatic monkey who climbs and monkey bars across her cage at speed doing one paw turns.
