Eeek!!! not to the flies or maggots but to the roommates.
I guess there's no chance of you moving or you would have done so.

I had fruit flies in a hamster cage once caused by a piece of cucumber he had buried and which had gone mouldy.

Make sure that you cut any fresh food into tiny pieces, so tiny that they dry up rather than rot should your hamster bury it.

I think (but i'm not sure) that flies are usually attracted to food in a warm and moist environment so what do they feed on in your hamster's cage?
