I have no idea if things have changed or not but some years ago I tried the birch substrate & found it extremely dusty & not soft at all, binned it.
Miscanthus is a broad leaf grass & when dry it’s quite smooth & the edges are sharp so I have no idea how that would work as a substrate really.
