I agree. If it’s your first hamster I would get a Syrian - a nice handful to handle and perhaps easier to learn the ropes on. They are great characters as well. Their personalities vary whether male or female. I’ve only had male Syrians. One was lazy but would sit for a cuddle. Another was maverick and full of energy always wanting to be out. Female Syrians generally are considered extremely active and can be quite large and need a big cage. They also come on heat every four days which may affect their behaviour. They have a bit of a musky smell when in heat but apparently some it is not noticeable and some it is very noticeable.
