Also the 28cm Trixie wheel - Amazon sell it.If you're not worried about it being silent then no need to go for an expensive silent runner wheel. Many people use the 28cm Trixie wheel and fine it quiet enough. Yes it is awful the things pet shops sell! Sadly it is all just commercial and many pet shop staff don't even know what is suitable - they just sell the stuff that is manufactured. There is no legislation in the Uk as to appropriate sized cages or wheels. To be fair, the small wheels that come with cages are usually fine for a dwarf hamster - but not a syrian. But they don't say that! There isn't a single cage I know that actually comes with a Syrian sized wheel.
Don't worry - we have all been there as new hamster owners and had to find out these things.
