Ooh you're getting one - exciting! Yes I don't think the sliding up glass panel is necessary - it's probably intended for people who don't have much substrate. Easier to do it from the top - I did wonder about sealing that glass panel inside but that sounds a fiddle. And not easy to find hamster safe aquarium sealant. I had a look once and some that say pet safe are still very smelly.

I would think a hemp mat on the base would be a good idea - if you have substrate on top. The only time I had a hemp mat get pee soaked was when a house was directly on top of it with only a thin layer of substrate underneath.
