Default Ideal Hamster cage

So I still haven't found my ideal hamster cage I am thinking specifically for Syrians. Been thinking about it again now that Pickle has been in the Savic Mickey 2XL for a while. The front door is just so brilliant for a hamster that doesn't like top access. He is really comfortable coming to the front of the cage with the big open door. And I am hooked on the access on that cage again - just wish it was a 100cm cage.

This is the cage I started with. Upgraded to the Barney - which was perfect for Newt as he was quite gregarious and would come to one of the little doors to come out. It didn't work for Pickle at all who hated the big top door opening and I couldn't have good access with the little front doors.

So a few years ago I searched for my ideal cage and couldn't find it - settled for the Barney.

When I couldn't find my ideal cage last time I wrote to Savic and asked them to make a 100cm Hamster Heaven - they wrote back and said they were thinking of something like that. The result was the Savic Hamster Plaza.

So I now have a hamster plaza (for Moo) and although it's a better size for enrichment than the Savic Mickey 2xl - the door doesn't work as well for access. Because it's the same size door as the one on the Savic Mickey 2xl but it needs to be wider! Because the cage is wider.

To be fair the big door on the front of that is fairly good for hamster interaction but very difficult for access trying to reach into either end - so still not as good as the Hamster Heaven/Savic Mickey 2XL.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if someone produced a 100cm cage with a big front opening door where most of the front actually opens - like it does on the Hamster Heaven/Savic Mickey 2XL. Some hamsters are just too shy or nervy for small doors or top access.

I used to think the 90cm Exo terra terrarium was probably close - for a dwarf maybe but at only 45cm deep it is not quite as much floorspace as something like the Barney - for a Syrian.

Out of all the cages, tanks and diy's out there, there is still a lack of a really good syrian cage with a really good big front door!

It makes you want to go into cage manufacture.

Like this - but without having to mesh it
