Thanks Amityville that would make sense. although I guess it depends on the hamster as my hamsters have plastic wheels and tubes and in the past I had sand in an old plastic icecream tub which never got chewed.
Although, if something is blocking a cornner you know what hamsters can be like, they will chew anything to get out
