You've got me worried now, peculiarplanets - and I thought I was being over-cautious!
I've just seen some self-adhesive magnetic clips on amazon. Our detolf has a custom-made wooden bar running around the top, and we could fix one-side of these to the bar and the other to inside of the lid. The gap created by the magnets is only 1.6 mm, so there shouldn't be any problem with escape by that means. They will resist a force of 1.6 kg northwards, so that might be a possible solution. They will be hidden when the lids are closed - smaller and neater than a pile of books.
