I would second Luna's reply. We put used shavings on our flowerbeds and it helps to keep the weeds down.

But are wood shavings really so bad? I've just bought another big bag for our impending new arrival. We always used wood shavings for our hammy, and were planning to do the same with the new one - just a thin-ish layer in a 'playground' type are, and then paper substrate in a much thicker layer that will allow her to burrow. Would it be okay to use it like that? I've not seen anything else available here, so had to order the paper substrate online.
