I got my hamster from petco. When I first went to the store I didn't see any syrians, and asked if they had any. They were keeping one in the back because he'd had a patch of fur missing from the top of the head and were watching for resolution to make sure they sold a healthy hamster. It had just about completely grown back and they were getting ready to put him back out on display the next day. That was a year and a week ago, and Smokey hasn't had any health problems at all so far.
They might have been watching/treating your hamster for something and just hadn't gotten around to moving him up front yet as well.
