They keep them at the back for all sorts of reasons. They might have been ill, maybe they fought with their cagemates, maybe they were the last of a litter to be sold (and the tank was needed for another litter), maybe they just didn't have space in the main store. Or they might have been returned by a customer or abandoned at the store.
