Aww poor little mite! He's very blessed to have you looking after him now; and welcome to the wonderful world of hamster parenting! Ria P's suggestion of just putting your hand into the cage first, then using a mug to get him out is a great one. Sometimes stroking the hamster and offering treats whilst they're inside the mug held over their cage, not even putting them down anywhere, can be a great intermediary step. Also giving him some bedding with your scent on it is really important. Good luck!
