If it really is massive then maybe there is too much open space and he feels insecure and wants to escape - or the bedding isn't deep enough. They need a good few inches of substrate minimum (I tend to go with about 6") and plenty of places for hiding - under a platform, in a large house - lots of floor toys and tunnels so they can run around and not feel too exposed from above.

The other thing that can make them want to escape is too much cleaning out. It removes all their familiar scent and they feel invaded.
