Default Re: Unexpected babies

This does seem to happen a lot with pet shop hamsters! Is your hamster a syrian or a dwarf hamster? (Or a robo? Robos breed unbelievably fast and are hard to "sex"when young).

It sounds like you are doing all the right things - leaving them alone and putting out plenty of food. If the babies are handled before they emerge from the nest on their own then the Mother may cull them so best to wait before disturbing anything or handling them.

When they are about 4 weeks (I think - others will know better) the boys and girls will need separating but the girls can stay in with the mother. So you will need another cage. You can then start trying to find homes for them and they can leave at about 6 weeks. If you don't find homes for them straight away they will each need their own cage by 7 weeks or they can start fighting (depending on the species). Dwarf and roborovski hamsters can live in sibling pairs but syrians can't).
