Is his wheel working properly and a suitable size? The wheel the HH comes with is on the small side and can cause discomfort over time which stops them getting as much exercise as they need and ending up bar chewing.

It does sound like he’s upset from his tubes being taken out though, hopefully he’ll adjust soon. My favourite boredom breaker is to take one of those woven balls and stuff seeds in the gaps! Scatter feedings and burying food under some of the substrate encourages foraging behaviours and keeps them busy!
