Default Re: Dietary Requirements

The Rodipet ones are a bit low in protein so that needs supplementing. For a good that contains everything they need and enough protein, Harry Hamster is a good basic choice. It does have some good ingredients - whole peanuts in shells and black sunflower seeds. While it may have some colours in it doesn’t do any harm and the pieces are a good size for a Syrian. So you can’t go wrong with it for simplicity and ensuring they get enough protein. Our first Syrian had it and lived to 2 years 8 months. After that I tried mostly organic and soya free diet (a mix of Rodipet, bunny dream hamster and supplemented natural protein). It didn’t make much difference to lifespan and diseases of old age.

I think for a new owner, making sure a mix has enough protein is very important as working out supplemented protein can get complicated and not enough protein can cause a lot of health issues.
