I am so sorry. That is very sad and as Souffle says we will never know. They can be born with a genetic weakness. They do leave a big hole in our lives and hearts. I hope you feel able to get another hammy as I find it helps to look after another one who is a bit different - different colour or sex eg. You're not replacing them but just continuing to love a hamster who needs you.

I would think about getting a hamster from a different place next time though as some pet stores may not use the best breeders and we don't know what breeding practices have been used before they get to the pet store.

It is not your fault and nothing you could have done. This clearly came on very quickly and she passed in her nest in a loving home.
