I would say it entirely depends on the tank construction. Different tanks are made from different thicknesses of glass. The thinner the glass the less able to handle any overhang, especially if knocked. Also, the thickness of the glass adds weight and increases pressure on the bottom if not supported fully. Personally I would buy a piece of wood to go between the tank and furniture that will cover the whole length, and create a small lip around the tank. This would more evenly distribute the weight and prevent the risk of pressure cracks in the base of the tank.

I use these for holding all my tanks. I have them in black and with the black trims of all my habitats it looks rather smart. I appreciate they're not everyone's cup of tea but there's definitely no weight concerns.
