Is it a paper based or wood based bedding you are currently using? I would avoid any pellet beddings (such as paper pellets or wood pellets) because they can’t burrow in them. Personally I use Fitch paper bedding, which you can get on Amazon. The price seems to keep going up unfortunately, but I find a bag lasts a very long time. It’s great for hamsters to burrow in and is great for odour control. Carefresh is an okay option, but like you said, it is expensive and a bit dusty. Opinion on wood shavings varies, but I personally wouldn’t use them because they can be dusty and have sharp pieces in,
