I would suggest you have something a little bit deeper that sticks out, and put a fireguard round it! Then you would only trip over the fireguard (less likely as it's tall enough to notice), not the cage. eg this

35cm deep is a bit narrow, even with the length, but with 90cm it "should" be ok, depending on the dwarf hamster and if set up carefully.
