I would suggest you have something a little bit deeper that sticks out, and put a fireguard round it! Then you would only trip over the fireguard (less likely as it's tall enough to notice), not the cage. eg this

Or better still - build a playpen/fireguard!

35cm deep is a bit narrow, even with the length, but with 90cm it "should" be ok, depending on the dwarf hamster and if set up carefully.

Some people used to use clearseal tanks like this. You would need to make a lid

Junglepets also make tanks for hamsters that come with lids. This one is 36 x 15 x 15 but they will make it any size you want if you email them.
