The Ferplast guinea pig house is good and inexpensive. It has a flat, removable roof.

Is the house with the tunnel entrance a plastic one? Could be that he got too hot in there and moved out if its a plastic one.

Trouble is that hamsters sometimes change their peeing arrangements. Mine pees in his corner toilet in his house and used to pee in the other corner toilet in the cage while outside his house. Now he ignores that toilet and pees in the corner behind the sand bath. Why? I have absolutely no idea.

I'd leave the caves or one of them in if they give him another level and you have the space. Hidey places are always good.
