Pippin does chew on the mesh roof of his cage. I've tried many ways to dissuade him but, sadly, wasn't successful. He has never rubbed his fur off while doing that. But I know it's possible. But the other patches wouldn't be caused by that.

Although, Newt's moult does look similar to Pippin's patch on the side of his face and around the ear. Thank you for your replies and for sharing your experience. I'll keep an eye on Pippin (he has another check-up booked in two weeks). I'll also try giving him linseeds.
