I think you are more bothered by Nugget not being able to run on his wheel than Nugget himself!
I can imagine that hamsters adjust like humans do when health issues stops them from doing certain activities.

Yes, hamsters definitely communicate. You're lucky that Nugget looks at you while you chat to him. Henry often gives me the kiss my ass gesture by turning round and showing me his backside when i talk to him.
