I think a lot of it is trial and error and depends on the hamster. I had mine since March, moved his cage once because the original spot turned out to be drafty, he's on his 4th wheel, the first two were too small and one he didn't like, he's in his 2nd cage as first one was too small for a Syrian and 2nd house because he outgrew his first. Then i had this toilet carry on and eventually found out that my hamster wanted an en suite ceramic toilet! Unlike you, i hadn't done my homework so serves me right, lol. Also, it took me a while to get to know hamster Henry, his likes and dislikes.
