I don't think a cage needs to be covered but i got the card sheet to keep sun off or the overhead light in the evening.
Why do you want a lamp on above the cage?
My hamster would hate that. He is at his most active when all lights are off and we've gone to bed. Dark, quiet and his own company, that's what he likes best but he's not exactly the most sociable of hamsters, lol.
