It's usually because of stress. They are not trying to trim their teeth, it is actually very bad for their teeth and can cause them to grow crooked or break.

The most common cause of stress is that their cage is too small. They are very active animals and if they don't have enough room to run around and things to do they can get bored and stressed very quickly.

What kind of cage is he in?
