I don't think many people use a raised lid, though having a detolf myself I would definitely recommend one. The kind of lid you go for is going to depend on whats available to you, are you going to use the semi-circular pieces in the example or go for something square?

There are £5 BESTA IKEA shelves which would be around the right width if you cut one in half for two square-ish end pieces for example. Do you have a table saw or are you good enough with a hand saw to cut something like this in half accurately? You could also use pine board but this is more difficult to cut again.

Personally I would be making two separate lids to keep the weight down, they'll be awkward enough to lift out of the way as it is without making it one huge piece.

I wouldn't head to B&Q before you have a clear idea of what you're doing tbh.
