I think I would definitely protect the shelf - either with plastikote, or what I did once was just put a hemp mat on the shelf - it's fairly thick and I reckon pee wouldn't get through it
Mainly because it's a good shelf and you can't get a replacement one that would fit the same. Houses can be replaced easier.
