My Syrian will go out of his way to pee in the sand. But easiest way to potty train is to wait for him to pick a pee corner, then stick the sand bath there. Voila! Potty trained.
You can sometimes spot them peeing. Smokey sort of sniffs around where he's planning to potty, then turns around and backs up to the corner with his butt kind of lifted. Then he hold still for a few seconds, and when he leaves you see this wet spot there. Oh, and it smells bad, so that's another dead giveaway.
