I'm glad to hear he seems to be doing alright, it can be a bit hard to tell whether or not they're feeling ok when lumps are involved especially when they're affecting their mobility. They can get a bit upset if shelves are removed as they do act as extra shelter too - it would be nice to keep it in if you can but I suppose you'd need a fence/barrier to help prevent falls and maybe lower it a bit for better access.
