Leaving the sand out sounds like a good idea for now - Syrians often aren't that interested in sand baths - ours just has it in his toilet/litter tray. Have you put a new batch of Carefresh in then? I am not familiar with Xeno - assume it's for mites. If it is that then the cage clean and Xeno might do the trick.
