Sleeping in the sand shouldn't be a problem so I wouldn't worry about that.
She is getting older now although not really old yet but they can lose conditio with age, what mix do you feed her? The flax often helps a lot, a really tiny pinch of brewers yeast once or twice a week can help too also a drop of evening primrose oil a couple of times a week.
