You do need to try to be confident around your ham, remember that if anything your ham is more likely to e nervous than you are & he needs you to feel confident, trying to get into that frame of mind may help a bit.
You could try putting your hand in the cage & burying your fingers in the substrate with a treat on your palm, your ham will probably walk onto your palm for the treat & it will just be a gentle touch for you to begin with.
