I've also found they get a bit freaked in the playpen if you leave them on their own - and they can also tell when you're doing something in their cage! Sometimes it's better to do the spot cleaning when they're in the cage so they can see the changes and it's less of a shock. And to be with them in the playpen and talk to them so they don't feel scared. I actually used to get in the playpen as well sometimes and they run all over you (helps them to get used to your scent and presence) but keep well away from the sides! Or they can run up your arm and jump out!
