I applied sealant to mine, especially focussed on the ends where the glass went into the wood as the last thin you need is pee soaking into the crevices.
I would also make a lid regardless of how deep or shallow you have the substrate. I had a Syrian who escaped several times from the detolf despite having shallow bedding at the time. Just make sure you measure at several different points to get accurate measurements
