My hamster usually chews the bars of her cage whenever something isn't right and/or to express the stress she might be feeling due to a change for example because she knows it is an effective method to get a guaranteed quick response from me. We may not interact often but she has a good idea of what sort of person I am and how to communicate with me. Hamsters in general aren't given enough credit, they really aren't!
