Default Re: new hamster ? in same room

I keep my 20 gallon gerbil tank right next to my hamster's bin cage and I have no problems at all. Gerbils aren't particularly noisy, unless you've given them some cardboard to chew on, then it's noisy. My hamster doesn't seem bothered by my gerbils at all, and vice versa.

If you are going to be getting gerbils, a pair of gerbils fit very comfortably in a 10 or 20 gallon glass tank. I don't know if these are cost-effective or widely available where you live, but I was able to get my 20 gallon for $20 plus tax when my local pet shop had a dollar-per-gallon sale. I think I paid about $50 for my 10 gallon when there wasn't a sale. Gerbils really don't need a ton of room, smaller is safer. Anything above 20 gallons runs the risk of gerbils becoming territorial and could lead to de-clanning. As long as the tank is deep enough for sufficient bedding, it doesn't have to be super big.
