Question Can I pat Mummy hamster if she appears to want them?

Hi there,

My Russian Dwarf Hamster had babies 3 days ago, as the pet shop mistakenly gave me a male and female instead of 2 females.

I've tried to follow all the rules of giving her privacy. She's had her litter in her favourite little plastic house (that I bought from the pet shop) and I have not yet seen them or approached her nest. I know they are still alive as I occasionally hear their soft squeaks.

This is where my question comes in...
When I feed her, I put her food in the top level of her cage. If she's away, she comes straight way and tries to crawl out the door and into my hand like she usually does when I feel her (without the babies). If she is approaching me, am I allowed to pat her? I find that if I ignore her, she jumps up on the bars as though she wants attention.

So is it ok to pat her in this case if she comes up to the entrance and I'm far from her babies?

I also get concerned that her house is too small and wish I could take the roof off to give them more space...but I do not touch or approach. I figure she will know what to do if it's too small and needs space right?
