It's hard to know which approach is best sometimes without actually seeing the ham, sometimes you just have to go with your instincts, they're all different & respond differently, getting him out in his nest box probably isn't the best thing as he needs to feel that that is a safe place, try to coax him out if you can & see if he will climb into something you can transport him in.
It might be right for him to just try & scoop him up but only you can decide really, you do need to be confident if you do that or you could just make him more nervous.
If he does seem really stressed out when you try getting him out maybe leave it the next day to give him a break & try again the day after.
Continue with lots of talking to him so he can get comfortable with you by the cage.
Sorry I can't think what else to suggest really.
